Prospective Students

The Department of Biochemistry at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana has for more than 60 years trained outstanding graduate students in biochemistry, cell, and molecular biology. The Department is currently home to 18 faculty members, 33 graduate students, and 20 support staff. Research facilities for the Department of Biochemistry are located in the Biochemistry Building and in two adjacent buildings, Whistler Hall and the Hansen Life Sciences Research Building.

Faculty Research

Research interests of the Department of Biochemistry faculty range from fundamental problems in cellular physiology and organization such as gene regulation, DNA, RNA and protein structure, enzyme mechanisms and signal transduction, to important health issues such as cancer, alcoholism and heart disease. A range of up-to-date tools and techniques drawn from the disciplines of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology and genetics are routinely used to accomplish research objectives in our laboratories. Biochemistry faculty collaborate with researchers from several departments at Purdue and other institutions in the United States and around the world. These interdisciplinary interactions enhance the breadth and scope of training available to graduate students.

Research Support

The ability to obtain national research grants is essential to provide support for graduate students. Research in the Department of Biochemistry is supported by faculty grants from the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the American Chemical Society, the American Cancer Society, the United States Department of Agriculture, the American Heart Association, and selected industrial sources.

The Purdue Graduate Student Government serves as a voice for graduate students on the Purdue campus. They sponsor a number of programs, social activities and services for graduate students. For information and links to other student organizations, visit the Student Activities & Organizations on the WEB home page. The graduate school shares graduate news in "The Graduate newsletter" on the graduate school web site.

Purdue is continually integrating its physical resources and internet assets, making many services more efficient and accessible. For instance, Student Services INFOrmation (SSINFO) allows web based access to current class schedules, financial aid, and much more, including even getting concert tickets.  Access to the internet and email can be done on campus at Instructional Computing Labs (Location, Schedule) or at home using the free dialup access (RESNET).  In conjunction with RESNET, students have a web space (more than 450 MB) that is easily and quickly manipulated through Career Account Access

To aid research, libraries are located all around the campus and on the web. In addition, there is a writing lab to tutor students and to provide a "grammar hotline".

The university is not only interested in the academic well-being of its students, but also their physical health as well.  An integrated network of health services provides for all of the physical and emotional student needs as well as a constantly expanding recreational gym  to enhance physical fitness and reduce stress.

Additionally, Purdue is constantly looking for ways to ease the economic burden students face.  Two examples of this are the agreement with Microsoft, which allows for software purchases at dramatically reduced rates and free local public transportation with Citybus.
