ScholarshipsThe Biochemistry Department awards scholarships annually to undergraduate students from two scholarship funds. Additionally, our students qualify for various scholarships at the College and University levels. Mertz ScholarshipThe Edwin T. Mertz Memorial Scholarship, funded by an endowment established at Purdue University, provides one or more undergraduate biochemistry majors with a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 or more. The number of scholarships awarded and the amount of the award depend upon endowment income in a given year. Eligible applicants are undergraduate Purdue students majoring in biochemistry in the College of Agriculture. To qualify, a biochemistry major must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on the 4.0 scale and be a sophomore, junior, or senior in the year for which the scholarship is awarded. A faculty committee appointed by the Head of the Department of Biochemistry will select the recipients and determine the amount of each scholarship (subject to the minimum), all with the approval of the Dean of the College of Agriculture. The Scholarship will be awarded during the Spring semester each year to a continuing student, and will be applied toward the student’s tuition and fees during the subsequent academic year. Application deadline: March 17, 2008. Matchette ScholarshipThe Patrick C. Matchette Scholarship, funded by an endowment established at Purdue University, provides one or more annual scholarships for undergraduates from the greater Chicago area who are enrolled in the university's Department of Biochemistry. To be eligible, a student must be from Lake, Cook, DuPage, McHenry, Kane or Will County, Illinois. Sophomore, junior and senior candidates shall have maintained a minimum 3.0 on the 4.0 scale cumulative GPA at the university. Incoming freshmen with a SAT VM score of 1200 or higher or with a high school class rank in the upper five percent are also eligible. Students who qualify for this award will be considered automatically; there is no application. College of Agriculture ScholarshipsA variety of scholarships are awarded each year. The deadline for applications is January 11 for current students or February 15 for high school seniors. Purdue University ScholarshipsEntering freshmen admitted for the fall are automatically considered for some University-wide scholarships regardless of the academic program to which they have been admitted. Most awards are based on academic performance as defined by standardized test scores, high school GPA, and/or class rank. Others take leadership, service, and financial need into consideration. While many of the University-wide scholarships do not have an application, some do have a deadline by which a student must have applied for admission to the University. To maximize their opportunities for Purdue scholarship consideration, students should: • apply early in their senior year for admission to Purdue to begin the following fall, • file the Preliminary Financial Aid Estimate application (provided with admission application), • file their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by March 1 of their senior year, and • meet any necessary scholarship application deadlines. Other ScholarshipsAmerican Chemical Society sponsors scholarships for qualified applications who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry or chemical engineering. These scholarships are for high school seniors or college freshmen, sophomores or juniors who are African-American, Hispanic or Native American. Applicants should be high achievers in science (GPA of 3.0 or higher) and be able to demonstrate financial need according to the FAFSA. The deadline for applications is March 1.
